The AMD's bulldozer FX-8170 is the highest clocked 8 Core processor that will launch in the last quarter of 2011 / First Quarter of 2012. AMD expects this processor to give a serious challenge to the hegemony of the Intel's 2nd generation Sandy Bridge processors.

The FX-8170's turbo frequency of 4.50 GHz should give tremendous boost to the processes that require high processing power for a short duration of time.

The Bulldozer architecture consists of modules. Each module consists of two cores. The bulldozer FX-8170, for example, has 4 module and, with each module consisting of two cores, there are 8 cores in total. AMD realized that some of the segments require more parallel operations - e.g. the integer processing. It therefore provided an option of two integer cores for each module. Each module, however, consist of only one floating point unit. This scheme increases the overall processing power without increasing the power consumption.

The FX-8170P will not ship with the other FX-series processors that are expected to commence shipment in the week starting June 20th, 2011.

The FX-8170P benchmark results are not available. But we should be able to make some guesses by extrapolating the benchmark results of the FX-8130 when it launches.

  1. The FX-8170P will be launched later. Let us focus on the FX-8150P for now, which will launch shortly.

AMD is keeping everything secret, but let us hope that this comes out to operated at expected speed grade and gives good fight to Intel.

  2. I dont think FX-8170P would be a threat to the 2nd generation Intel Sandy Bridge processors. The 8170P is not launching now. And when it does, Intel will be ready with Ivy Bridge.

  3. If we are to believe the motherboard manufacturers present at the Computex 2011 in Taipei, the launch of the AMD's bulldozer processors has been further delayed to August 2011.

A large number of motherboard manufacturers and designers including Asus and Gigabyte displayed the new 9-series motherboard that was optimized for the AMD's 8-core processor. None of the motherboards had the bulldozer processor installed. The motherboard manufacturers could not give any definite idea about the supply of the processors. They were vague when they said that they will have to wait till August before the bulldozer processor will become available.

With this the June 20th 2011 date that was displayed at several places definitely looks a non possibility.

  4. It looks like your blog is being copied at several places.

I think google should take some proactive steps to block the other copies and give preference to this copy of the blog.
