Sony Vaio VPCF236FM/B is prices at $1199 at the time of writing. If you plan to use the features it provides - the Blu Ray Player the Nvidia graphics, the USB 3.0 and, of course a fast quad core processor, the price is worth it.

You will get only an entry level notebook for this price if you choose Apple. On the other hand, if you do not plan to use its features, you may find something decent enough for $600 or so ( shed the Blu Ray, USB 3.0 , nVidia Graphics and take, for example Core i3-2330M processor).

1. Toshiba Sattellite L755-S5349 - is available under $500 at amazon. It is smaller 15.6" laptop, but has the core i3-2330M - the same processor that comes with Dell I17RN-2706BK

 The good thing about this notebook is a relatively longer battery life ( close to 6 hours)

2. Acer Aspire AS5755-6699 is a $399 laptop has a smaller 15.6 inch screen. Has the same Core i3-2330M processor and also comes with an HDMI port. As bonus you also get a USB 3.0 port which is great if you wish to transfer data to, and from, from a camcorder or a USB 3.0 external Hard Disk.

The screen of Gateway NV57H58U-1730 is 16:9, and there for it looks wilder. The keyboards of this Gateway notebook comes with number keys on right hand side

. The DVD drive runs and sounds like a big fan, ans is noisy ( Though you may not be using it all time). Other than that it is good for my son to do his home work. BTW, newegg has 8G memory for $30, just in case you do not think 4G is good enough.
