Difference Between AM3+ and AM3 Socket - Bulldozer processor

Difference Between AM3+ and AM3 Socket

- Socket AM3+ socket has an extra pin ( unused ? - citation needed)
- The AM3+ motherboard will have bigger hole. This increased the current carrying capacity and eases processor insertion into the motherboard.
- The bigger hole also increase the signal integrity as has been claimed.
- The clips to hold the fans have improved design that will make the CPU cooler.
- AM3+ sockets are backward compatible with the AM3 sockets
- If you have invested in the older AM3 socket consult your motherboard manufacturer. Probably a BIOS upgrade will make it work with bulldozer processr.
- Bulldozer processors require AM3+ socket, but a AM3 socket may also work with BIOS upgrade. Check with motherboard manufacturer.

If you have anu more question about the difference between AM3 and AM3+ Socket feel free to ask in the comment section below.

New Instruction Sets in AMD Bulldozer

What are the new instructions sets supported by Bulldozer ?

The new bulldozer instruction set is compatible with the older instruction sets. Besides, that it adds supports to the newer instruction sets

AVX (Advanced Vector Extensions)

The AMD’s AVX ( Advanced Vector Extension) set runs in parallel with the Intel’s SSE5 instruction set. These instruction sets are supported by the Sandy Bridge Architecture as well.

The basic concept of the AVX is to use a very large register to store a large number of the small size data and process all of them is a single stroke with a single instruction that we call the AVX instruction. This gives sincere boost to the execution time.

There are 12 new instructions in the bulldozer architecture and. There is an increase in the size from 128 bits to 256 bits in the XMM register.

The first of these are the SSE4.1 and SSE4.2. The present AMD architecture does not has the support for the SSE4 instructions. The SSE4 instruction sets will give a boost to the execution of the multimedia based applications. We should therefore see an increase in the image and video processing.

Current AMD processors have the support only for the proprietary SSE4.a instructions sets.

AES (Advanced Encryption Standard)

The AES instructions is used for encryption. The AES instructions earlier created a difference in the benchmarking results between the AMD and the Intel. Intel already has the support for the AES instructions for most of its processors.

LWP (Light Weight Profiling)

The new LWP instructions is used to monitor the performance of the software. These instructions will be used by the developers for monitoring the performance of the software.

AMD FX-8130P - The bulldozer Processor

The AMD's FX-8130P , 8 core bulldozer processor promises quantum jump in performance with its new architecture. The buldozzer architecture consist of the modules that comprises of two cores with integer scheduler and dedicated L1 Cache..

The block diagram below explains the architecture and the concept of the module and the core. Let us take a look at it

Carefully look at the block diagram above. This is the block diagram of one module of the FX-8130P. Inside the one module there are two Integer processing Units and one Floating Point Unit ( Shown in the Center). So why one FP Unit and two Inter Units ? Well after a lot of research AMD found that "most of the time" the processor spends its time in the Integer processing rather than the Floating Point. So AMD decided to dedicate two Integer Units and a Floating point unit.

There are 4 such modules and the Marketing department of AMD says that it has 8 cores.

Does i3 processor require a graphics card ?

Does a laptop with an i3 require a graphics card?
I have 15.6" screen computer with i3 processor and 2GB RAM, preferably HP. My needs are home based:
1) Social networking - facebook, and emails
2) Gaming (Age of Empire)
3) Storing lots of photos and pictures
4) Watching DVDs
5) Making notes
6) Playing and storing music

Which series would be the best?

Answer - The notebook core i3 processor for example, core i3-330M has integrated Intel HD graphics. You need to differentiate between two types of the Intel core i3 processors - the 1st generation core i3 processor and the second generation core i3 processors. The 1st generation core i3 processors have a moderate level of the gaming performance.

With the first generation Intel core i3 processors you will be able to play only entry level game at low resolution. You will have difficulty playing the game at mid to high resolution

This is not so with the second generation Intel core i3 processors. They have x2 performance as compaared to the 1st generation core i3 processors. So you will have a decent graphics performance.

So how do you differentite between a 1st generation and a 2nd generation Intel core i3 processors ?

Well look at the part number of the processor. A second generation intel core i3 processor starts with 2. For example core i3-2310M is second generation core i3 processor, while the core i3-350M is a first generation core i3 processor.

We expect that this helps you. If you have more question, please feel free to ask compare-processors.blogspot.com
